702 MILES TO FREEDOM

The Freedom House

South Sudan has the eight highest rate of child marriage in the world. Girls that are subjected to child marriage often times face sexual and domestic violence. Additionally. during South Sudans long civil war, conflict related sexual violence has become prevalent.

A lot of effort is being made to ensure that girls rescued from child marriage and other forms of gender-based violence are able to access education. While education plays a pivotal role in transforming the lives of these girls, their mental health is neglected is often times neglected.

Catwalk to Freedom wants to change that by building a trauma center in Juba South Sudan- Freedom House. We want to work with survivors of sexual violence to provide wholistic recovery from the trauma they have experienced and we need your help.

In order to complete phase one of Freedom House, we need $10,000 to secure the land, build a fence and finalize the design.

How can you help?

Donate to the campaign: Every dollar counts towards building the center.

Walk/Run to Freedom: The distance from Nairobi (where the founders of Catwalk to Freedom currently live) to Juba (Where the center will be located) is 702 miles. As we start the new year, consider joining our walk/run to Juba and help us raise $10,000 by February 28th. It will cost just $14.25 per mile to reach our goal!

CATWALK TO FREEDOM BOOK DRIVE FOR HOL COMMUNITY LIBRARY, KAKUMA REFUGEE CAMP

CATWALK TO FREEDOM BOOK DRIVE FOR HOL COMMUNITY LIBRARY, KAKUMA REFUGEE CAMP

Background

With the influx of refugees in Kakuma Refugee Camp, access to vital services such as education is strained. It is estimated that there are sixty five thousand refugee students attending less than fifty schools. Owing to limited income generation opportunities, refugee families are unable to afford the costs of school supplies leaving refugee students to rely on schools’ provision of text books and other learning material. Due to this, a single text book is likely to be shared among several students with the possibility of a student not having access to the same book.

To offer alternative channels of access to learning material, communities in Kakuma are establishing community libraries. The Hol Community Library was established in November 2017 to enable refugee students’ access to additional reading resources away from school.  Although this community library remains under-resourced, it serves a total of one thousand and five hundred students and pupils as reported by the librarian. The library is in need of support to ensure that students fully utilize it. There is insufficient amount of reading material.

Project Goal and specifications

Catwalk to Freedom is undertaking this project to improve the Hol Community Library by increasing the number of reading material such as text books available in the Library, and creating a children’s literacy corner to improve the literacy skills of refugee children and students.
